Bhubaneswar: Police will move court to get Sanjay Nishank, who was arrested on Thursday for a series of burglaries at Chandrasekharpur and Infocity, on remand after probes revealed that he was involved in other robberies.

The police have recovered assets worth Rs 70 lakh from the 30-year-old BBA graduate, who used to work for a leading cellular company.

A police source said they would move court on Monday. "We found that he was involved in around a dozen burglaries, but further investigations revealed that he was involved in more than 20 cases. So, we need to further interrogate him regarding his involvement in other cases," said deputy commissioner of police Anup Kumar Sahoo.

The police said their priority would be to return the recovered articles to the original owners. "So far, we have returned more than 50 per cent of the articles. While most victims have been turning up at police stations after news of his arrest was published, we urge others to approach the police," said a police officer.

The recovered articles include gold and silver ornaments, 26 laptops, 43 mobile phones, 27 watches, 59 saris, a number of trolley bags and other household appliances.

The police said Nishank's penchant for a flashy lifestyle turned him to a life of crime. "The accused came from a humble background. His father worked as a plumber in an irrigation project. He worked in a cellular company, but later lost his job and he turned to crime," said the officer.

The police said Nishank committed three burglaries at Chandrasekharpur and Infocity on a single day. "We initially suspected that a gang was involved in the burglaries, but later zeroed in on the accused," said another cop.
