Jajpur: Police on Tuesday arrested a man for the alleged attempted rape of a 25-year-old woman at Maru Tikara village in the district's Kalinga Nagar Industrial Complex.
Prahallad Dalei, 35, a resident of the same village, is married and has two children, the police said. He was taken into custody after the survivor lodged a complaint against the him.
Danagadi police station officer-in-charge Gitanjali Nayak said the incident occurred on Sunday night when the survivor was alone at home as her parents had gone to attend a marriage. Dalei barged into the house when she was sleeping.
"He tried to rape me when I was sleeping. When I resisted, he assaulted me. I managed to raise an alarm and he fled," the survivor said in her complaint, adding that the accused also threatened her with dire consequence.
The survivor narrated her ordeal to her parents when they returned the following day. The survivor 's father then brought the matter to the notice of the village committee, which convened a meeting and summoned the accused on Monday. But, the accused did not come. As a result, the committee directed the survivor's parents to approach the police. The survivor then lodged the complaint with the police on Monday night.
"Based on the report, we arrested the accused. We conducted their medical examinations at the government hospital on Tuesday," the police said. The accused was charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in local court on Tuesday and remanded to judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected.
