Bhubaneswar, Jan. 12: The city police have decided to create an account on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter to interact with public.

The police have also decided to screen documentaries on safety of women in cinemas across the city.

The social networking platform for the city residents to give their suggestions and air their grievances would be launched on Tuesday on the sixth foundation day of the city police.

There are five documentaries each of 30 seconds duration and one of them will be screened before a film starts to create awareness regarding safety of women and other things.

Residents can also access the links of Facebook and Twitter accounts of the Cuttack and Bhubaneswar police on the official website (bhubaneswarcuttackpolice.gov.in) and can send their feedbacks as well as suggestions to improve the performance of the police.

While an additional DCP rank officer will monitor the social networking activities, residents can capture videos and upload criminal activities on these sites. The cops said that police force in several metros including Bangalore have created their account on social networking sites.

“The police will ensure that the feedbacks and complaints received through the social networking sites are quickly responded to,” said police commissioner R.P. Sharma.

The five documentaries to be screened at various cinemas of the city are based on three main themes — senior citizen, safety of women and traffic regulation.

“Apart from cinemas, these short films will be shown at various cultural programmes in the city to reach out to the public,” said a senior police officer.

Although the city police in 2011 had started screening two short films on traffic rules and violations, the same was discontinued after a few months.

Earlier in September last year, the police had started making public announcements through PCR vans about precautionary measures to be taken by residents to keep criminals at bay.

The city police that came into existence from 2008 will observe its sixth foundation day on Tuesday. It will organise a marathon tomorrow to promote police-public relationship on the occasion.

“So far the performance of the city police is up to the expectation of the residents. Although traffic situation has improved, the police needs to curb incidents of loot and snatching,” said Dibakar Pradhan, a senior citizen of Rasulgarh.
