Bhubaneswar, Aug. 20: Many proposed projects of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) are yet to materialise even as the civic body gears up to celebrate Local Self-Government Day on August 31.

The foundation stones of three foot overbridges were laid at Jayadev Vihar, Rama Devi Women’s College and Master Canteen Square on August 30 last year. However, the work is yet to start on them.

“A foot overbridge is badly required near Jayadev Vihar Square because there is no provision for pedestrians to cross the main roads. When we learnt that authorities were going to build the overbridge, we were happy. However, we have seen no progress in the past year,’’ said Anand Patra, a resident of Acharya Vihar, which is quite near the square.

Apart from Jayadev Vihar, the ever-increasing traffic near the railway station and Rupali Square near Rama Devi Women’s College means increased woes for commuters because of the absence of overbridges.

Minor accidents take place every now and then and people trying to cross the roads through the vehicles considerably slows down the traffic flow.

Another major project that has not been completed is the main city bus terminal at Pokhariput. Though the city bus service started on October 10, 2010, the delay in construction of the terminal has forced the bus operators to park the vehicles by the roads at night.

“The civic and development authorities have been assuring us they would hand over the main city bus terminal since January 2011. But even today, the basic facilities are yet to be ready. The origin and destination terminals for the smaller nodal points for the city buses are also not ready,” said a senior official of the company running the city buses.

A street-sweeping machine was introduced by the civic body last year in association with an agency doing the contractor’s job in solid waste management and sanitation. However, since all the roads are not suitable for the vehicle, it is lying idle.

Two major market complexes — BMC Keshari air-conditioned market in Unit-II and Panchdeep Complex in Unit-IV — were inaugurated on Local Self-Government Day in 2010.

Shops from the BMC share are yet to be opened at Unit-II market and Panchdeep Complex is yet to be opened for business.

Among the many plaques unveiled on previous local self-government days announcing projects, one is right inside on the premises of the corporation which says a multi-storey office complex would come up. However, no such structure came up.

Similarly, an under-construction community centre building in Unit-VI is yet to be completed. The foundation was laid a number of years ago.

Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena said: “All background work has been done and we will start building the foot overbridges in the next two or three days.”

Speaking about the main city bus terminal, the mayor, who is also chairman of Bhubaneswar-Puri Transport Services Limited, the company that manages the city bus service, said: “The construction is being done by another agency. So, I cannot comment on the issue.”
