Bhubaneswar, July 24: Spirituality is reigning supreme for devouts fasting to fulfil Ramadan vows. But at the break of fast in the evening, people from all faiths are seen hooked to Mughlai delights served at lavish Iftar parties hosted by many residents, including some eminent names.
A platter of the dishes most loved for their spicy preparation unique to the Muslim kitchen can be seen spread out in the evenings after the call for breaking fast is announced. The hosts group up to celebrate the success of each day’s fast during the Iftar. From relatives and friends from the community to well-wishers from other religions and faiths, all are invited to Iftar.
“The aroma of the dishes such as kebabs, koftas, tikkas and of course biryani is simply irresistible. I love to attend the Iftar parties hosted by my friends. The ambience is full of happiness and brotherhood,” said Gungun, a television personality, who was seen enjoying the dishes at BJD’s 14th annual Iftar last evening.
Date palms and a variety of dry fruits are definitely offered for the occasion since the tradition is to break the fast by consuming them. Sweet dishes, among other preparations, are much loved. The two special items — lachha and siwayan — prepared with vermicelli, sugar and milk, are the most popular dishes during Ramadan.
“Ramadan fasting helps us realise how important water and food are as divine gifts. When we fast during the day, it strengthens our patience and belief in God,” said Saba Bashir, a young devout.
Some of the popular Iftar dishes are preparations of ghosht or mutton items such as mutton biryani, pulao, haleem with raita and various snacks such as dal vada, bhujia and so on.
“Usually, we break the fast with a gathering of the family members after we have read our prayers. But it feels wonderful to invite friends and neighbours and host a bigger Iftar at least a few times during Ramadan. This makes our bonds with friends stronger since they encourage us in our spiritual endeavours of Ramadan and congratulate us for having completed fasting successfully,” said Sk Azaduddin, a resident. Some of the famous Iftar parties are hosted by actor-turned-politician Munna Khan, veteran sportsperson and well-known road safety activist Maqbool Ali and businessman Altaf Ali among others.
