Jajpur, Oct. 11: Officials of the anti-narcotics cell of Jajpur police today arrested two persons for allegedly possessing about two grams of brown sugar worth over Rs 30,000. The seized contraband was packed in 105 small pouches.

The accused persons were identified as Prasanta alias Amar Mohanty, 30, of Chandma village and Rajendra Mohanty, 35, of Kanheipur in Jajpur Road police station limits.

A special police team, led by inspector Rajat Kumar Praharaj, nabbed them from a hotel near Jajpur Road railway station. The police said Prasanta and Rajendra had been held while trying to hand over the brown sugar to a peddler at Kanheipur in Vyas Nagar Municipality.

The cops also recovered one motorcycle, three mobile phones and some cash from their possession.

Details of peddlers and customers buying brown sugar are also being looked into.

It is suspected that the demand for brown sugar at Vyas Nagar, Kalinga Nagar and its nearby areas has grown.

Local drug peddlers sell the brown sugar in 20-milligram pouches that cost between Rs 400 and Rs 450 depending on the quality.
