Bhubaneswar, Sept. 25: The situation was straight from a spicy Bollywood movie, when an 18-year-old girl was kidnapped from outside her college in the city today only to be found that her parents, upset with her love marriage, designed the episode.

Four persons, including two women who came in a car and kidnapped the Plus Three second-year student of Biju Patnaik College of Science and Education around 10am.

“The girl was with her friends when the four persons stopped her, slapped her and forcibly took her away,” said eyewitness Soumya Ranjan Pradhan, another student.

The incident took place about 100 metres from the college. Though some local shop owners tried to rescue the girl, their attempt went in vain. “As soon as I saw the girl being kidnapped, I started running towards the vehicle. But by the time I reached the spot, the vehicle had fled,” said Dillip Mallik, who owns a photo studio in the area.

The high-voltage drama continued when principal Kishore Chandra Swain reported the matter to Nayapalli police station and her father was contacted. He pleaded ignorant about the matter. “I have been not at home since morning. She had fled from the house since June 25 and we lodged a complaint with Saheed Nagar police. We heard that she had married someone,” said the girl’s father Harihar Patnaik.

Later, investigation revealed that the car used for the crime belonged to one Sankar Patnaik, who is Harihar’s relative. Later, the police had detained Harihar for further interrogation that slowly led the mystery to be solved when her family members produced the girl in front of the police.

“Her father said her daughter had an argument with her mother over telephone two days ago,” said a senior police official.

The girl said her family members kidnapped her opposing her relationship with a youth of Saheed Nagar. “My mother and relatives forcefully kidnapped me after my classes got over today. They took me to a house at Niladri Vihar and threatened to kill my husband and me. I got married in court on August 11, and since then, my family has been opposing the marriage as my husband belongs to lower caste,” said the girl.

Sources said the girl had eloped with a youth, who works as a site in-charge in a architecture firm.
