Paradip, Feb. 7: Construction of two major units of Paradip oil refinery project is nearing completion with the successful installation of gigantic coke drums and reactors.

The vital structures of the delayed coker unit and alkylation units have been put in place. The units convert low-value oil residual products to lighter products of higher value and carry forward extraction of raw petroleum coke crude oil.

The company had set September 2013 deadline for the refinery to become operational. As things are moving, the officials are optimistic of the project’s commissioning within the stipulated timeframe.

“Four coke drums have been installed at the project site. The drums were enormous. The project engineers and technical staff members undertook the exercise in putting in place the objects. Alkylation reactor and settlers were procured from South Korea through sea route. The equipment were erected and installed for operation of alkylation unit. Construction of these units are almost complete,” said the oil refinery project’s executive director Madhusudan Vijaywargiya.

Coke drums and alkylation reactors are vital components of the oil refinery project. It’s a proven technology and helps a refinery process a wide variety of crude oil. These are the heart of the unit, he said.

In another development, Indian Oil Corporation Limited has engaged more labour force to accelerate the commissioning of Rs 29,777 crore worth project within the stipulated timeframe. Nearly 10,000 skilled personnel from civil, chemical and engineering wing have been reinforced to speed up the work. If required, there will be further reinforcement in coming days, said a company official.

“After several hold-ups in past months, the progress is satisfactory at present, following amicable settlement of labour unrest. Nearly 90 per cent of the project work have come to an end till date.
