Bhubaneswar: Taiwan’s ambassador to India Wenchyi Ong on Wednesday evinced interest to establish cultural and commercial ties with Orissa. Ong expressed his interest during his meeting with chief minister Naveen Patnaik at the state secretariat here.He said that Taiwan is keen to invest in electronics, information technology and food processing sectors in the state.

Power protest

Balasore/Sambalpur: The industrial entrepreneurs of Balasore district are up in arms against the power tariff hike recently notified by the Orissa Electricity Regulatory Commission.he entrepreneurs, under the banner of the North Orissa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI) demanded withdrawal of tariff hike. They also threatened to take legal action if relief is not assured to them.he power tariff for the industrial units has been hiked twice in the last 14 months, which comes around 58 per cent at the base rate Rs 3 per unit, they said. “Time has come to down our shutters, as neither can we afford to have a captive power plant nor can we run the plant with diesel,” said convenor of the NOCCI Amit Behera.

Vigilance grill

Balasore: Following detection of shortfall in the stock in a rice mill near Sergarh in Nilagiri sub-division, the vigilance sleuths on Wednesday grilled the local tehsildar and additional civil supplies officer suspecting their role during routine verifications . Tehsildar Sarat Behera had issued certificates as enforcement officer, assisted by additional civil supplies officer Trilochan Nayak after verifying the stocks and issue records. “We have quizzed both of them suspecting their connivance with the mill-owner as they have issued the enforcement certificates after joint verification of stock. The incumbent tehsildar during verification as an enforcement officer did not reflect the cumulative shortfall in supply,” said sources in the vigilance department.

Pupils caught

Bhubaneswar: With a total of 946 students caught adopting dishonest means during the fourth paper of the matriculation examinations on Wednesday, the figure of students who have indulged in malpractice has touched 4,342. Besides, around 17 officials, including two centre superintendents in Sundergarh, Dhenkanal, Jajpur and Balasore were found guilty of “dereliction of duty” and encouraging malpractice.

MLA bailed

Balasore: Controversial Congress MLA Ramesh Jena, who was arrested by city police on February 8, was on Wednesday granted bail by a fast track court in Bhubaneswar. The city police had arrested Jena from the farmhouse of another Congress leader at Brahmagiri in Puri district one week after his personal security officer had fired at the police on February 1 mistaking them as anti-socials. The police had raided Jena’s house in Chandrama apartment after getting information that armed goons had visited the place.
