Tension at Central University office

Bhubaneswar: Students of Central University of Koraput, who were in the city to attend a programme in which Union minister of state for human resource development D. Purandeswari was chief guest, ran amok on the premises of the varsity camp office at Gajapati Nagar on Wednesday. The irate students tried to gherao vice-chancellor Surabhi Banerjee when a few staff members intercepted them. In the scuffle, a student, Nishan Pattnaik, suffered minor injuries. The situation was brought under control after police reached the spot.

Health team

Bhubaneswar: Mobile teams and doctors have rushed to Chandanpur in Puri where an outbreak of diarrhoea has been reported. Two persons have died and 50 others have been affected. Patients are being treated in various Puri hospitals. Samples have been collected and sent to the regional Medical Research Centre. Steps are being taken to prevent contamination of water, said an official.

Bus service

BHUBANESWAR: City-bus service will be available in Puri town by the end of January and the town-bus services operating in Bhubaneswar will be extended to Khurda. A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by chief minister Naveen Patnaik at the state secretariat.

Labourer killed

BHUBANESWAR: A labourer was killed and seven persons injured when an under-construction school building at Ghuturu in Kendujhar district collapsed on Wednesday. The building -Rabindra Vidya Niketan - collapsed around 4pm. The deceased is yet to be identified and the injured have been rushed to Kendujhar Sadar Hospital. Police are investigating the case.

Seven nabbed

Berhampur: Acting on a tip-off, Berhampur police raided a house in Andhapasara Road and arrested seven robbers on Wednesday. They were planning a heist. A 9-mm pistol, seven cartridges, three bombs and Rs 64,000 in cash were seized from their possession. All the seven have been forwarded to court, said police.

Cold wave

BHUBANESWAR: A cold wave had many parts of the state in its grip throwing normal life out of gear. Districts such as Rourkela, Sambalpur, Keonjhar and Balasore shivered in record low temperatures. The temperature in Daringbadi of Kandhamal dropped to 0 degrees Celsius.

Land protest

BHUBANESWAR: Tension erupted at Rourkela on Wednesday after people in Ward No. 30 of the town protested against an eviction drive launched by the district administration for widening roads and building drains. Police came to control the crowd.
