CM’s no to change

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday said there was no plan for a reshuffle in the ministry. For the last two months, speculation was rife that he would go for a reshuffle in his ministry. Even the senior leader of BJD, Pyari Mohan Mohapatra, had given hints that there would be reshuffle in the ministry. In order to carry out a possible reshuffle, the party had also asked the ministers to submit a performance report, which later triggered a major controversy. Both Mohapatra and agriculture minister Damodor Rout locked their horns on the issue of performance assessment. .

One rescued

Bhubaneswar: A 12-year-old female domestic help was rescued by a few local youths from the Kumhar area in Puri. The girl, who bore several injuries when she was rescued, had reportedly been beaten up by the lady of the house she was employed in for some silly mistakes. The girl was handed over to police. She underwent medical examinations and was later sent to a shelter home. Police have assured action against the guilty in the case.

Protest rally

Bhubaneswar: Students of the Fakir Mohan University in Balasore on Tuesday launched an indefinite strike demanding better lighting inside the university campus and canteen facilities. The students locked the main gate of the university and refused to call off the agitation until their demands are met. The students had launched a similar strike in 2009. The authorities are yet to act on the assurances they gave us in 2009, rued the agitated students.

Tusker dead

Bhubaneswar: Local residents on Tuesday discovered the body of a dead elephant at the Narsinghpur jungle in Cuttack. Poachers had allegedly set the carcass on fire after removing the tusks. Forest officials have rushed to the spot.

BMC training

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started its training programme for enumerators and supervisors of the 2011 Census at 11 centres in nine locations across the city. “The training programmes will be held in two phases during January 19, 20 and 28 and January 20, 21 and 29 to train 2,200 people drawn from schools, anganwadi supervisors, and staff of different government departments and the BMC,” said deputy municipal commissioner Priyadarshi Mohapatra, adding “the BMC area is taken as one census district. The civic authority has taken all necessary measures to ensure that the Census exercise completes smoothly.”.

Suicide

Bhubaneswar: A personnel of the Special Operations Group (SOG) posted in Kandhamal district allegedly committed suicide at Brahmanigaon. He belonged to the anti-Maoist wing of state police. The deceased, Sanjay Patra, was posted at Brahmanigaon for anti-naxalite operations. His body was found in a pool of blood with a bullet wound on his head.
