Twist to rape case

Bhubaneswar: The gangrape case took a curious turn with the victim's father alleging that a distant relative was involved in the crime. However, the victim accused her family members of bringing false charges. The 18-year-old girl was gangraped in a moving vehicle on June 10. The victim in her complaint lodged on June 13 with the Mahila police station had accused Manoranjan Sahu and Ajay Malia of raping her and recording the crime with a mobile phone. The police, however, found no obscene material in the phone. Deputy commissioner of police Nitinjit Singh said the mobile phone had been sent for further examination. The girl’s father has alleged that one of their distant relatives, Uttam Jena, did not inform him about the incident. “I came to know about the incident from the media. He (Uttam) ruined my daughter’s life and forced her into a racket,” he said and demanded a probe into the incident. Uttam, however, termed the charges as “false and baseless”. Giving a clean chit to her brother-in-law, the victim threatened to commit suicide if her father pressed with such false charges.

Tehsildars

Bhubaneswar: Revenue department has ordered for immediate joining of 31 tehsildars who have not yet joined after their transfers. Revenue minister Badri Narayan Patra today said actions would be taken against the tehsildars who have not yet resumed their offices since their transfer.

Bhubaneswar: Cuttack and Bhubaneswar experienced intermittent rains since morning on Thursday. Officials of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that the same condition would continue for the next 24 hours.
