Bhubaneswar, June 12: Young fashion enthusiasts now have another shot at exploring the world of design, thanks to a slew of programmes launched by the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Bhubaneswar.

The institute has announced short-term courses on computer-aided textile design, fashion styling and sketching, retail stores operation and sales promotion.

These programmes will be one to two-weeks long during which candidates will be taught the basics of the trade.

NIFT has also decided to give a chance to students of engineering to switch to designing.

“Diploma or degree holders in engineering can take admission into the third semester of the bachelor of fashion design, textile design, fashion and lifestyle accessory design programmes through lateral entry. Such a provision is being made for the first time,” said director of the institute, K.C.S. Ray.

Tech students, however, will need to compete in an all-India entrance examination to be considered for lateral entry.

Admissions will be done on the basis of merit.

To inform students about the options and let them get a feel of the various courses and activities conducted at NIFT-Bhubaneswar, the authorities had organised an open-house programme early this month that was attended by a number of aspirants.

Giving details of eligibility, Ray said those applying for lateral entry are also required to hold a three-year diploma or degree after Class X or Plus two in courses related to fashion or fashion technology, such as apparel, textile, accessories, apparel technology, leather, home science, handloom technology, products, visual communication, graphic design, industrial design, interior design multimedia design or technology engineering from central or state government institutes with a science background with a diploma or degree in engineering may also apply.

Those candidates interested in lateral entry can fill forms online on the NIFT website and submit those before June 17.

The written exam and interview will be held on June 28, said NIFT officials.
