Bhubaneswar, Feb. 16: The public relations officer of the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack police, Rabi Chandro Nayak, who was facing charge of duping people, surrendered before a local court today following a directive from Orissa High Court.
Nayak had been absconding for the last six months after the police registered a case against him for cheating several youths in the name of providing them jobs.
In November, police had declared him an “absconder” after he evaded arrest. He had duped several youths to the tune of around Rs 2 crores promising them of jobs.
He had taken cash worth Rs 2 lakh from each of the job aspirants promising them to provide jobs in banks and police department and had also issued duplicate appointment letters to some of them.
Nayak was today presented before the sub-divisional judicial magistrate who granted him bail on Rs 50,000.
He surrendered before the court after the High Court ordered him to appear before the sub-divisional judicial magistrate here.
The court also imposed some conditions, which Nayak will have to follow during the course of investigation.
“He has to co-operate with the investigating officer. Also, he should not put pressure on the victims,” said public prosecutor of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate’s court Anjan Samantray.
Badagada police had booked Nayak under sections 420 (cheating) and 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) of the Indian Penal Code in last November.
The public relations officer had been on leave for more than two months before he was declared absconder.
Nayak, an information officer under the state information and public relations department, had been on deputation to the police department for last two years.
One of the complainants, Ramakrushna Padhi of Hinjili area in Ganjam district, said that he and nine other youths from his area had paid Nayak a total of cash worth Rs 20.35 lakh to get jobs during the drive for recruitment of constables which was going on in December 2011.
Padhi said that another person, who claimed to be a legal adviser to State Bank of India, was accompanying Nayak in his illegal activities.
