Bhubaneswar, April 19: A derogatory post on social media forced the state government to shutdown Internet services in Kendrapara for 48 hours to maintain law and order.
Kendrapara Town police lodged a case on the basis of a complaint filed by a group in this regard today.
The police said the post that was put up on the site yesterday came to the notice of the group this morning. "They submitted a memorandum to the district administration for a detailed probe into the incident. Subsequently, they lodged a police complaint. We have registered a case under the IT Act," said a police official.
Kendrapara police superintendent Dayanidhi Gochhayat said they had deployed eight platoons of police in the town to prevent any untoward incidents.
"We had to recommended the suspension of Internet services to the state government to ensure that the matter didn't flare up further. We are keeping a strict vigil and have not received reports of any untoward incidents so far," he said.
The police said they would shortly convene a meeting with members of both the groups to restore peace in the area. In a related development, Bhadrak sub-jail authorities today shifted 88 accused in the clash to four jails in Keonjhar and Balasore districts because of space crunch.
