Paradip, Sept. 9: Four members of a family from Jagatsinghpur have been stranded in the flood-ravaged valley for a week.

They had gone on a holiday to Jammu and Kashmir.

Binayak Pattnaik, 59, his wife Chinmayee Pattnaik and their two sons from Chatara village near Jagatsinghpur visited the shrine of Vaishno Devi near Katra on September 1.

“My parents and brothers were stuck in a hotel at Kajikund in Anantnag district, 45km from Srinagar. My husband Sambit Satrujit Das works with the Indian Air Force and is based in Srinagar. He invited them to visit Jammu and Kashmir,” said Kisha Goutami Pattnaik, 28, a bank official from Bhubaneswar.

“On September 3 on their way to Srinagar, they were left stranded as the vehicle carrying them got stuck due to heavy landslides,” Kisha said.

“I could talk to my parents last night after a week’s gap. There had been no communication channel all this while. They told me that they were safe but not able to move out of the hotel. Though the area is not a flood-hit one, there is an acute scarcity of food. The worst part is that my parents are unable to contact my husband in Srinagar,” she said.

Jagatsinghpur collector Satya Kumar Mallick said: “The stranded family is safe in Jammu and Kashmir. The state government has taken up the matter with the joint-resident commissioner in New Delhi for airlifting the family members from Kajikund.”

In another development, the state government has decided to provided Rs 5 crore to flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir and will send one unit of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force to the state.

“A 40-member team is ready with all required rescue equipment, boats and submersible pumps. We have informed the home ministry and the Jammu and Kashmir government,” said special relief commissioner P.K. Mohapatra.

“Today, we got to know about a couple from Kalahandi to be missing there. We have informed the officials and requested them to locate the missing couple,” said Mohapatra.
