Bhubaneswar, Feb. 16: The state government has anticipated an 8.08 per cent economic growth rate during 2014-15 as against a 2.21 per cent growth rate in the previous year, even as the state ranked fourth from bottom in terms of per capita income.
Manipur, whose per capita income was below Odisha in 2012-13, has surpassed the state this time. However, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Assam continued to lag behind Odisha.
During 2013-14, Odisha's real per capita income at 2004-05 prices was Rs 25,891, much below the national average of Rs 39,904. It lagged behindseveral states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Punjab and Kanataka.
According to the Economic Survey report for 2014-15, prepared by the state government, the upswing in the growth rate may be attributed to the higher growth rates in the industry and service sector.
During 2014-15, impressive growths may be witnessed in construction sub-sector (21.56 per cent), transport, storage and communication sub-sector (12.18 per cent), banking insurance sub-sector (11.09 per cent).
Odisha's economy has been witnessing a gradual shift from its traditional dependence on agriculture to industries and service sectors.
During 2013-14, the agriculture sector had registered a negative growth rate of 9.78 per cent due to the occurrence of cyclone Phailin, followed by flash floods. The manufacturing sector recorded very low growth rate of 2.16 per cent and the construction sub-sector had a stagnated growth (-0.04 per cent), while trade, hotel and restaurant sub-sector posted a meager 0.17 per cent.
The industrially advanced Jharsuguda district has reported highest per capita income (205 real per capita index), followed by Angul (157). Kandhamal district, too, registered an impressive per capita income (170)due to bumper crop production of ginger and turmeric.
On the other hand, tribal-dominated Nabarangpur district recorded lowest per capita income (61) followed by Malkangiri (65). Coastal Nayagarh and Kendrapara districts register low per capta income, 68 and 72, respectively.
