Duration of power cuts to reduce

Bhubaneswar: The government on Monday decided to reduce the duration of power cuts in the state as the hydropower generation position has improved. Earlier, power cut had gone on for three hours in many parts of the state. Sources said the power cut would be for one hour during the day and one hour at night. Energy minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak said: “Despite short supply of power from the NTPC, we have managed to improve the power position and overcome the crisis.”

Hirakud gates

Bhubaneswar: Two more sluice gates of the Hirakud reservoir were opened on Monday. The water level of the reservoir was 609.02 feet. While the water inflow was 49,921 cusec, the outflow was 7,77,142 cusec. So far, three sluice gates have been opened to discharge water from the reservoir.

Labourer dead

cuttack: A labourer died while seven others suffered minor injuries after the driver of a truck lost control and drove off Birupa Bridge near Jagatpur on Sunday. Police sources said around 10 labourers were sleeping inside a temporary shelter under the bridge when the truck fell on them. One labourer died on the spot while others are undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital.

Two killed

Berhampur: Two labourers were killed when a tractor carrying them fell into a roadside canal near Aska in Ganjam district on Sunday. The driver of the tractor, which was going to lift sand, was seriously injured and admitted to a nearby hospital. The deceased were identified as Krushan Nahak, 28, and Chitrasen Nahak, 21, of Pandiapadar village near Aska.

Protest

Balasore: The block grant college teachers on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the district collectorate on Monday. They demanded implementation of service conditions and salary on a par with their government counterparts. The agitators presented a five-point charter of demands to the district administration.

Prayers

Bhubaneswar: The residents of Berhampur on Monday offered prayers at various religious centres for local lad K. Ravi Kumar. Ravi will participate in the 69kg weightlifting finals in the ongoing London Olympics on Tuesday. Earlier, Ravi had won a gold in 2010 Commonwealth Games and three bronze medals in the Senior Asian Weightlifting Championship in 2011.

Devotee killed

Bhubaneswar: A woman Bol Bom devotee was killed in a road accident on National Highway 5 near Iskon temple on Monday morning. Geetanjali Samantray of Malipada was hit by an unknown vehicle while she was going to Lingaraj temple after fetching water from Mahanadi in Cuttack. While Geetanjali died on the spot, her nephew accompanying her suffered severe injuries and is undergoing treatment in a private hospital.

More beds

Bhubaneswar: Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Institute will be expanded, with 30 more beds at the hospital. This decision was taken at a governing body meeting on Monday. The authorities have also decided to introduce two new courses such as surgery oncology and gynae cology oncology.
