Youth shot dead, murderers flee
Berhampur: A 27-year-old person was shot dead when goons opened fire at him outside a liquor shop at Khodasingi within the limits of Baidyanathpur police station here on Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Binod Das of Nua Bauri Sahi.“Binod, a labourer, had gone to the liquor shop, where he had an altercation with a group of goons who were drunk. Following the quarrel, one of the accused opened fire at him. The bullet pierced through his head and the group of four fled on motorbikes,” said Dipak Kumar Mishra, inspector in charge of Baidyanathpur police station. Binod died while he was being taken o MKCG Medical College and Hospital. The police have registered a case after Ramesh Das, father of the deceased, lodged a complaint. Berhampur: A mother and her son were killed in a road accident at Kukudakhandi in Berhampur on Wednesday. Krushnapriya Rath, 55, a Hindi teacher at Dura High School and her son Mahesh Mahapatra, 28, demonstrator of chemistry in Bhatakumurada College were on their way to Berhampur on a motorbike when a sand-laden truck hit them from the front. The duo died on the spot. Koraput: Students of Koraput Central University on Wednesday staged a demonstration at the university’s main entrance. The students demanded shifting of the vice-chancellor’s office from Bhubaneswar to Koraput, reduction in fees and better hostel facilities. They had been boycotting the classes since last Friday. Bhubaneswar: Three boys and four girls of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (Kiss) have been selected in Odisha Sub-Junior Kho-kho team to take part in Sub-Junior National Kho-kho Championship (boys and girls) scheduled to be held at Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand. Sambalpur: Farmers of Budhakata on Wednesday alleged that ash from the mound of Hindalco Industries Ltd of Hirakud had again flown to the surrounding lands on Tuesday night. The Hindalco officials denied the allegation. Regional officer of the state pollution control board S.S. Mishra said the ash had flown to a smaller portions of land and it had not caused serious damage. Bhubaneswar: The Central Electricity Supply Utility on Wednesday announced introduction of SMS system to check power theft. “Anybody who sees electricity theft by a person or organisation can send a message mentioning the name of the culprit along with the address to 9437158670,” the power distribution company said in an official statement. Bhubaneswar: Malkangiri police arrested four youths for smuggling ganja from the district. The accused were transporting the ganja from Kalimela area of Malkangiri to Chhattisgarh in a jeep when security personnel engaged in anti-Maoist operation nabbed them. About one quintal ganja was seized.
