Odia boy wins tennis tourney in Spain
BhubaneswaR: Odia boy Avilash Mishra won the Elcha U-16 National Junior Tennis Championship Title at Elcha, Spain, on Wednesday. He defeated Mesia Jose Antonio of Italy 6-7, 6-0, 10-7 in the semi-finals and in the finals, he defeated Alexandro Diaz of Spain in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 and received a prize coupon worth 200 Euros. 'I would like to thank my team, especially my coach, S.C. Sarangi, director coaching, SS Tennis Academy, who took pains to help me reach this level,' said the young tennis player. BhubaneswaR: Nutan Nayak, a young girl from Tikabali in Kandhamal, has secured the first place in Young Driver-2012, a national-level car driving competition held by Maruti Suzuki and Autocar India to promote safe driving. Nutan, a journalism student, who is also managing Seva English Medium School for tribal children, was among 21,000 participants from across India and will represent Odisha in the grand finale to be held in Delhi on July 30. Balasore: Balasore vigilance sleuths on Thursday seized a truckload of kendu leaves weighing about six tonnes and worth nearly Rs 3 lakh. The sleuths intercepted the vehicle following a tip-off. Three persons, including the driver and the helper, were arrested. Angul: : Protesters on Thursday called off the economic blockade at the Jindal Steel Plant following a written assurance from the district administration that their demands would be discussed at a meeting of the Rehabilitation and Periphery Development Advisory Committee on August 18. Local residents from nearly 60 villages had launched an economic blockade against the plant since Monday, demanding proper settlement and rehabilitation for the displaced. Bhubaneswar: An elderly woman and her two grandchildren drowned while they were bathing in a pond near Budhapada in Khurda. Local residents spotted the bodies floating in the pond and informed police. The bodies have been sent for autopsy. BHUBANESWAR: The state government has announced the takeover of 24 co-operative units of the state, including the Odisha State Co-operative Bank. The government has also decided to scrap all the existing elected chairperson posts of the units. BHUBANESWAR: Sambalpur University on Thursday decided to hold English exams for Plus III second-year students in all the colleges under the university for the second time. The decision was taken after students from many colleges complained of poor scores. The exams would be held within a month and could be taken by anyone, who was interested, said an official.
