Urban housing scheme for all

bhubaneswar: The state government on Friday approved a scheme Affordable Urban Housing for building houses for people belonging to economic weaker sections and lower income groups. Moreover, houses will also be built for the middle income group people. The Odisha Housing Corporation, all development authorities and the special planning authorities will be given a target to build the houses. Besides, the government will also come up with an Urban Poor Shelter Funds for the purpose.

Closure order

Bhubaneswar: The state pollution control board on Friday decided to keep the closure direction for Unit-II and III of power plant of Hindalco in abeyance for 15 days. The decision was taken following the plant authorities’ representation that closure of the smelter because of inadequate electricity might generate large volume of hazardous waste from it.

Jawans safe

Bhubaneswar: A total of 60 Border Security Force jawans in Malkangiri on Friday escaped unhurt in a landmine blast. Maoists are suspected to have planted it. The incident took place near Gamphakonda in the Kalimela police limits of the district.

Awards

Bhubaneswar: The Kendriya Sahitya Akademi on Friday gave away the Translation Prizes 2011 to 25 authors. Eminent writer Jayant Mahapatra presented the awards. While writer Hari Digir and Anju Makhija received the awards for English translation, Sanjay Jena received the award for translation in Odia. A translators meet will be organised on August 25.

Loot

Berhampur: Unidentified criminals on Friday broke into the house of Subash Chandra Patnaik, a resident of Govindnagar. “About 500 grams of gold, Rs 30,000 in cash and a laptop were stolen from the house,” said Patnaik. The thieves broke into the bedroom by removing the screws of the iron grills of window when the family members were asleep.

Vigilance drive

Cuttack:Vigilance sleuths on Friday conducted a house search of deputy superintendent of police of the Human Rights Protection Cell Ramesh Chandra Satpathy following allegation of acquisition and possession of disproportionate assets. Total movable and immovable property detected was around Rs 97,38,132.
