Bhubaneswar: Finance minister Prasanna Acharya demanded provision in the central act for levy of green tax on production of mineral to be utilised for environment protection during the empowered committee meeting of the state finance ministers on goods and service tax in Delhi. He also urged the Centre to compensate the states for losses on account of reduction in Central Sales Tax rates. Bhubaneswar: The regional All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here has started a thalassemia centre for bone marrow transplantation. Institute chief Ashok Mohapatra said besides treatment of thalassemic patients, the centre will have a blood bank and community medicine facilities to enable research on the inherited blood disorder. Bhubaneswar: An armed Maoist surrendered before the Koraput police alleging discrimination and torture by Telugu rebels towards Odia tribal cadre. Police said Jhadu Huika had joined the Maoist-backed Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh of Narayanpatna in 2008 and was providing logistic support to the Maoist group of Srikakulam-Koraput Joint Divisional Committee. Paradip: A 55-year-old man allegedly molested a cook of a government-run primary school in Narasinghapur village within Erasama police limits. The incident occurred on September 17. The absconding culprit happened to be a member of village education committee, police said, adding that a case had been registered in this connection. Cuttack: Tension prevailed in Ravenshaw University following a demonstration after two students were denied admissions for the new PG course in international studies, despite being selected in the entrance test. The students had held course co-ordinator Niranjan Barik hostage for nearly four hours. Bhubaneswar: Orissa High Court rejected the status report filed by crime branch regarding the matric exam question paper leak last year and asked for re-submission by September 22.
