Suktel project arrest

Bhubaneswar: Local police arrested 46 activists, including the president and the convener of the Lower Suktel Project Action Committee, on Tuesday. While the police apprehended committee president Gopaljee Panigrahi from his home here, it arrested committee convener Arun Mishra and 44 others from Sibtala Chowk on the Balangir-Patnagarh Road where 300 pro-project activists had paralysed traffic by blocking the road.

Cash theft

Cuttack: Unidentified persons on Tuesday looted Rs 2.80 lakh cash from two employees of Odisha Stevedore Limited near Link Road. The incident occurred around 12 noon when two employees of the company were returning after withdrawing money from the Arunodaya Nagar branch of the State Bank of India.

Trader shot

Jajpur: A trader was shot dead and Rs 3 lakh in cash was looted from him by unidentified persons near Ochinda village in the Panikoili police station area here Monday night. Bijay Ranjan Padhy was returning home when three motorcycle-borne persons snatched his bag and shot him from a close range. Padhy was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where the doctors declared him brought dead.

BJP rally

Bhubaneswar: Protesting against the hike in fuel price, BJP members on Tuesday took out rallies in Berhampur, Sambalpur, Rourkela, Jharsuguda and Keonjhar. More than 500 activists were arrested at various places of the state for trying to forcibly enter the collector’s office in their respective districts.

Gold loot

Berhampur: Five persons looted gold biscuits worth Rs 58 lakh, along with Rs 4 lakh in cash, from the house of a gold trader at gunpoint on Tuesday morning.he trader, Biswanath Mahapatra, is the south zone head of a company. “The robbers decamped with 19 gold biscuits weighting a total of 1.9kg, along with Rs 4 lakh cash from the B.N. Pur house of Biswanath. The looted gold is estimated to cost about Rs 58 lakh,” said Berhampur SDPO Sarat Mahapatra.
