Vigilance raid

Balasore: Vigilance sleuths on Wednesday carried out raids at Remuna block office following allegations of irregularities in distribution of houses under Indira Awas Yojna and Mo Kudia schemes. Vigilance inspector Umesh Chandra Panda said they would verify the documents and then decide their future course of action.

Tytler visit

Sambalpur: State Congress affairs in-charge, Jagdish Tytler and Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee chief Niranjan Pattnaik, along with other party leaders, on Wednesday visited Sambalpur, ahead of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's visit to the state. Rahul is scheduled to arrive here on February 18. He will interact with party functionaries of 17 organisational districts.

Humiliation

Rourkela: Three women were allegedly stripped and paraded naked in Sundergarh district on suspicion of practising witchcraft. The incident took place at Ambapada village, following which three persons were arrested. The victims were allegedly dragged out of their houses, stripped and assaulted by some villagers, who blackened their faces before parading them naked.

Two in net

Bhubaneswar: Rourkela police on Wednesday nabbed a Maoist during a combing operation undertaken in four villages in Sundergarh district. The arrested has been identified as Sitara Sikara. He has confessed to his involvement in various Maoist-related activities.

Case against principal

Bhubaneswar: A vigilance case has been registered against the principal of Government College of Physical Education, Sambalpur, on bribery charges. Santanu Kumar Mishra was caught red-handed while demanding an illegal gratification of Rs 30,000 from the complainant Chinmaya Sahu of Nayagarh for his admission in the college.

Special court

Jajpur: A special track court (STC) set up exclusively to deal with cases related to crimes against women was inaugurated by district judge Baisyampayan Kar on the district court premises on Wednesday. The STC was set up following orders of Orissa High Court.The court had ordered for such facilities in all the districts of the state by February 15. At present, the existing staff of the district court will run the STC.

Arrested

Bhubaneswar: Rourkela police on Wednesday arrested two persons for carrying 29kg of ganja. The arrested duo, Pappu Singh, 30 and Bikas Kumar Yadav, 21, hail from Bhojpur district in Bihar. The Odisha excise department produced them in court.

Rape accused

Bhubaneswar: The main accused in the Rayagada gang rape case, Munna Chhatria, was proved minor in the court and has been shifted to the Berhampur juvenile home after the Chief Judicial Magistrate at Rayagada rejected his bail petition. Four persons had raped the 16-year-old victim, an orphan, while she was on her way home from work on January 2.

Injured

Bhubaneswar: A 32-year-old construction worker sustained severe burn injuries after he came in contact with an 11 KV electric cable on Wednesday afternoon. The injured Pramod Majhi, a resident of Laxmisagar, was working in an under-construction house in Chintamaniswar area when the accident took place.
