Probe into Chandak mela clash

Balasore: The central range revenue divisional commissioner Arabinda Padhi on Wednesday began a probe into the violent clash between the police and devotees during Chadak mela, the annual festival of Lord Chandaneswar of Bhograi.

The incident, which took place on April 12, had left several people, including policemen, devotees and civilians injured. It triggered sharp reactions from various sections. The government had ordered a probe by the revenue divisional commissioner.

Aid increased

Bhubaneswar: The Centre has increased the Revised Long Term Action Plan (RLTAP) annual aid from Rs 130 crore to Rs 250 crore for eight districts in the Koraput-Balangir-Kalahandi (KBK) region, an official release from the chief minister’s office. On May 4, chief minister Naveen Patnaik had urged the deputy chairman of the planning commission to increasd the RLTAP aid for KBK region for another 10 years.

Compensation

Bhubaneswar: The All-India Democratic Students’ Organisation on Wednesday launched a state-wide students’ movement demanding punishment for those responsible for the Nayagarh incident in which seven children died following a wall collapse at an anganwadi centre. The students’ body demanded compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of each deceased child and adequate infrastructure in schools and all anganwadi centres.

Four held

Bhubaneswar:Four persons belonging to Tinigharia village were arrested on Wednesday for involvement in the death of two women last month. The bodies of Sashi Mallik, 45, and her niece Pratima Mallik, 27, were found floating in Kaiyan Nala on June 30. They had been missing for two days.

Farmers’ meet

Bhubaneswar: The Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture organised National Fish Farmers’ Day yesterday. An aquaculture innovators’ meet and a scientist-farmer interaction was held as part of the event. Over 200 farmers took part in the meet.

Doctor bail

Cuttack: The medicine specialist of Capital Hospital, K.C. Sahoo, who has been charged with neglect in the treatment of the Pipili gangrape victim, was granted anticipatory bail by Orissa High Court on Tuesday.

Sahoo, along with two other doctors, were booked in the case as the girl was initially brought to the hopital in November last year. Earlier, the court had granted anticipatory bail to SCB Medical College superintendent D.N. Moharana and Capital Hospital doctor Milan Mitra last week.
