Eight in cop net for assault

Keonjhar: Rugudi police on Friday arrested eight persons on charges of attacking the Roida sarpanch and her supporters on Thursday night. Four persons including the sarpanch and her husband sustained injuries following the attack. The injured are admitted to the Tisco Hospital in Joda. Past rivalry is believed to be the cause behind the incident.

Sambalpur: An undertrial of the Sambalpur jail attempted to commit suicide on the jail premises on Friday. The victim, Amosh Nag, was arrested in a rape case on March 25. He collected kerosene from lanterns of the jail and tried to burn himself. However, the jail staff and the inmates managed to extinguish the fire. He was shifted to the Veer Surendra Sai Medical College and Hospital in Burla. His condition is stated to be critical.

Penalty

Cuttack: The commercial tax wing of the vigilance department imposed a tax penalty of Rs 25 lakh on a Mumbai-based trader, Suresh D. Dhanresha, who was here to sell gold ornaments weighing about 4kg. The trader, who is the owner of Sona Rupa Jewellers, Zaveri Bazar, Mumbai,was trying to sell the ornaments estimated to be over Rs 1 crore at the Utkal Jewellery Mart at Nayasarak in the city when the cops on a tip off conducted the raid.

Woman ill

Balangir: A pregnant woman admitted to the district headquarters hospital fell seriously ill after she was given blood that did not match her blood group. The woman is stated to be out of danger after the doctors stopped transfusion of the wrong blood. Admitting the lapse, chief district medical officer Bikrant Kindo said he would conduct an inquiry into the matter.

Red menace

Bhubaneswar: The Maoists on Friday killed a contractor in Koraput district suspecting him to be a police informer. The body of the contractor, identified as Jami Prasad of Narayanpatna, was spotted with his throat slit and lying in a pool of blood near Jetal by local residents during early hours on Friday. Posters by the Maoists were found near the body.

BHUBANESWAR: The CID-Crime Branch on Friday filed a chargesheet against former inspector in charge of Pipili police station Amulya Kumar Champatiray in connection with neglecting the plight of the alleged Pipili gangrape victim.
