Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER) under SOA University had a grand celebration for three days. Their tech fest titled Chakravyuh and Genesis - 2K14 held from January 28 to 31, was themed on the epic Mahabharat. A flash mob in front of Sandy's Tower on January 24 sounded the bugle for the festivity. The festival consisted of more than 80 events such as war of bands, solo song and dance, fashion show and street play. The BAJA SAE car of the college was also unveiled on the occasion. The fest received a huge number of participants from various colleges of Odisha.
Mind boggling questions for over three hours stretched the brains of scores of teams who participated in the high-voltage national-level SOA QuizWiz competition organised by the SOA University at its campus here on February 3.
Saransh Mohapatra and Jyoti Prakash Panda, a team from city-based Silicon Institute of Technology, won it. They fought well against the determined challenge from Siddhant Agarwal and Sudipto Mitra, representing the Presidency University, Calcutta, in tiebreaker to win the first prize of Rs 1 lakh.
The first runner-up pocketed a prize money of Rs 60,000 while Sheikh Wasim Sajjad and Nishant Nihar from NIT, Rourkela, finished second runner-up winning Rs 40,000. Six teams, the other three representing College of Engineering and Technology, KIIT University and IIIT, Bhubaneswar, made it to the final round after a preliminary test. Mumbai’s renowned quizmaster Dhananjay Shettigar conducted the quiz.
Noble cause
As India observed Republic Day, Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB) celebrated the day in a unique way. The Social Responsibility Cell of XIMB organised Para Athlos, organised a sports meet for differently-abled children. The event saw participation of 113 students from Sri Harsha Memorial School for deaf and mute. Nine events including 100 metre race, spoon and lemon race, sack race, relay race and skipping in different categories according to age and gender were held. The children played to their hearts’ content enjoying the company of the XIMB community. They could not hear and speak, but their emotions were enough to portray their happiness.
Message of brotherhood
About 170 medical students of MKCG Medical College and Hospital spread the social message of communal harmony and brotherhood on the occasion of Saraswati Puja. They constructed the replica of Puri Jagannath Temple behind the Saraswati idol and a church and a mosque on two sides. Binod Chandra Sahu, a final-year MBBS student designed the replica of the temple with bamboo and thermocol sheets. It took him and his friends eight days to construct the whole thing while attending classes in the morning and working only during after the classes. Last year, they had expressed concern over price rise of onions and petrol and atrocities against women.
KISS meet
Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) organised the Mega Guardians’ Meet on February 2. Nearly 50,000 parents and guardians from all districts of Odisha as well as neighbouring states attended it. They got a first hand experience of the institute in the daylong event while interacting directly with KISS authorities and faculty members. Also, the KIIT Alumni Meet 2014 took place on February 2 at the campus premises. The faculty members thanked the alumni for spreading the goodwill of the institute across the globe. Being bestowed for the first time, the best alumnus award went to Odissi dancer and noted anchor Srinibas Ghatuary popularly known as Milan in the cultural circuit of the state. He is a BTech graduate and a 2001 pass out from the institute. About 2000 Kiit-ians (sic) attended the event.
Annual day celebrations
Rama Devi Women’s College had its annual day celebrations last week. State agriculture minister Devi Prasad Mishra was the chief guest while member of Parliament Prasanna Kumar Patasani was the keynote speaker. Discussions and deliberations took place on the contribution of Rama Devi in the filed of women education and empowerment. Other issues concerning the fairer sex were also discussed with the dignitaries prodding the girl students to excel in their respective fields. The principal Chitrangada Samanta Singhar thanked the guests and applauded the students for their achievements.
Girls on progress path
The annual event of Jaleswar Women’s College, Balasore, was held recently where the student presented colourful programme. The speakers on the occasion emphasised on the role of the students on nation building and how good moral behaviour helps in contributing national progress. Ram Chandra Khuntia, member of Rajya Sabha asked the students of the Lingaraj Law College, Berhampur, to stress upon the need for publishing the entire trial process of the judgments in Odia in every court except the high court in Odisha to facilitate the advocates. He was addressing the annual event of the students’ Union of Lingaraj Law College as the Chief Guest on February 3.
Manuscript conservation
The manuscript conservation centre of postgraduate department of the Sambalpur University organised an awareness camp at Anchalika Shramadana High School of Chichinda in Bargarh district on January 31. Students as well as teachers marched in an around the villages with placards and banners to create awareness about the manuscripts among the people. A meeting followed it. Coordinator of programme Biswajit Pradhan delivered the welcome address and highlighted the activities of the manuscript conservation centre. Former history professor P.K. Nayak graced the occasion as chief speaker. He highlighted the procedure of writing of palm leaf manuscript and its historical value. Former professor of Odia department, K.R. Panigrahi, who attended the occasion as guest of honour, emphasised on different wings of palm leaf manuscript and its conservation. An exhibition on the technique of conservation of palm leaf manuscript was also organised on this occasion that attracted a large number of students.
