It was haute couture on display when Kirti Kalpana 2014, the graduate fashion show by young designers of KIIT School of Fashion Technology, took place on May 17. The budding designers showcased their wonderfully crafted costumes to an august gathering on the KIIT varsity premises.
Well-known male and female models from outside of the states scorched the ramp with a grand display of electronic dance music and light in the background. Dipali Patel’s Fusion (mixing of Benarasi and Rajasthani design), Aadarsh Tripathy’s Scratch and Patch and Neha Kumari’s 64 Square design received rave reviews.
Partha Sarathi Das’s King of Roadways, Priyadarshini Padhi’s Bejewelled, Sanghamitra Giri’s Jashn, Saujanya Pani’s Canine Fashion, Vanshika Singh’s The Season of Love and Vishal Ranjan’s Sea Shell were also well appreciated.
Acclaimed fashion designer Bandita Biswal, Monika Agarwal from the department of fashion and textiles at NIFT, Bhubaneswar, actor Sabyasachi Mishra and actress Archita Sahu were the jury members. The audience appreciated the efforts of the amateur designers.
Dream come true
Cuttack based DRIEMS, one of the premier engineering colleges of the state, has been awarded ‘A’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) last week.
This accreditation has been empowered basing on academic excellence, state-of-art infrastructure, research, consultation, extension activities, student support and progression, effective governance as assessed by members of the NAAC peer team.
“This is a matter of pride for the faculty members and students. We will continue to put our foot forward in future,” said Pramod Chandra Rath, chairman of the institute.
Filming faith
Some of the final-year students of ITER College, Bhubaneswar, released their short film Ummeed on a popular Odia web portal on May 21.
The short film is based on the two extreme phases of a youngster — Ecstasy and Agony. These two phases are represented via stories of two young students.
Adi is a rich brat while Suri has been forced to shoulder the responsibility of his family and life puts them in such a situation that both of them have become hopeless.
The group of students named Team Scheme has already produced three short films earlier namely Waqt, Sacrifice and The End. All the three films have won some or other awards at the state-level film festivals.
Their latest film has been written and directed by Sidharth Goutam and Sumit Panda. Nilanchal Nayak has done the editing. Music has been scored by Kisaloy Roy, a Calcutta-based commerce student. While cinematography has been done by Rajaneekant Mishra and Sujit Jena, Ashutosh Panda and Matru Prasad Pati played the lead roles in the 30-minute film.
New vice-chancellors
Students of Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, North Odisha University, Baripada, and Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, have high hopes from the newly appointed vice-chancellors Ashok Kumar Das, P.K. Mishra and Siba Prasad Adhikari. The students are eager to meet them and wish to discuss their problems before them. “I hope he will stop the menace of conflicts within various groups. Also, students do not feel safe here. There is no sense of security. All this has brought a lot of bad name to the varsity. I have high hopes from the VC,” said a boys hostel inmate. Also, all the three universities suffer from faculty crunch, infrastructure problems and student unrest issues.
Football mania
The Ravenshaw Morning Club of Students is gearing up before the FIFA World Cup begins in Brazil next month. A summer football coaching camp is being hosted on the Ravenshaw University football ground. As many as 145 boys and girls reported for the coaching, but only 105 have been chosen for the final camp for one month after scrutiny. Narendra Sahoo, Nipendra Das, Pravakar Bardhan, Ram Matha, Iswar, Bittle and Rinku are looking after the coaching. The camp was inaugurated by the Ravenshaw registrar Padan Kumar Jena.
Festive high
The annual festival of Central University of Odisha has got the students of the varsity all pumped up. They are engaged in preparing for the annual event, Euphoria, which the students could not celebrate in its usual time — April — this year as there was no competent authority to sanction grants for the event in the absence of a VC and a registrar. As a VC in-charge has now been appointed and a new registrar has joined a few weeks ago, students are hopeful of celebrating the annual event by the beginning of the next academic year.
Results announced
Plus Three results of Berhampur University were announced on May 19. While 83.03 per cent students have passed in arts, 78.66 per cent and 81.39 per cent students passed in commerce and science streams respectively. The results of 38 students have been withheld for malpractice. Professor Manmath Padhi of department of history will take over charge as the registrar of Berhampur University shortly. His predecessor Bhabani Prasad Rath is scheduled to retire in August.
