Social networking sites are gradually proving their reputation as popular medium to reach out to a wider audience. The department of social work in BJB College, which was struggling to fill up its seats, has now hit upon a novel tactic of attracting students by going online. Posts on Facebook appealing to students to join the department are getting a good number of likes and comments.

Friends’ meet
Representatives of Vani Vihar (Utkal University) Old Students’ Society (1992 batch) felicitated Union minister of state for oil and natural gas Debendra Pradhan. Pradhan, an alumni of the varsity, was happy to see his juniors and invited them to have a detailed discussion during his next visit. Earlier, the society had felicitated state minister for panchayati raj and law Arun Kumar Sahoo. Both Pradhan and Sahoo were student activists during their varsity days.
Walk the talk
About 25 college-going volunteers of Basudha team that organises the annual national-level art and film festival, paid tribute to Mother Earth and Womanhood on June 4. As part of its celebrations, a walkathon aimed to encourage social change through environmental consciousness, was organised. It also spread awareness about recycling and the importance of preserving our biodiversity. The walkathon was flagged off from Master Canteen Square at 7am. Later, a signature campaign was conducted where messages for environment conservation in form of drawing and slogans were penned. On the same day, a plantation programme was organised by Cuttack-based Academics Plus Two Science Coaching Centre. To make the event memorable, a debate competition was held and a student named Debasish Muduli was adjudged the winner.
Go green
Berhampur University and forest division of Berhampur will plant 10,000 saplings on the varsity campus in the next three months in a joint effort. State governor and varsity chancellor S.C. Jamir, who is scheduled to visit the varsity shortly, is likely to inaugurate the green campus programme on June 26, said a source in the university. About 50 thousand trees were uprooted on the Bhanja Bihar campus during Phailin.
Cancer study
The Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital, run by the Siksha O Anusandhan University, has been chosen by the Indian Council for Medical Research to start a hospital-based cancer registry programme. The hospital is the first in the state to be chosen by the ICMR for such a program. This is the first step in establishing a full research background on oncology, including molecular biology, said institute’s medical director D.K. Ray. It would provide medical students an insight into various patterns of cancer and undertake an epidemiological research.
Polytechnic reforms
Odisha Private Engineering Schools’ Association (Opesa) drew the attention of employment and technical education and training departments to initiate steps to comprehensively address the problems faced by many private polytechnics in the state. On June 7, a state-level seminar on issues and challenges in diploma engineering education was held, in which the Opesa demanded immediate reforms in diploma engineering examination procedure.
State’s pride
A five-member team of National Law University, New Delhi, that won the prestigious International Criminal Court (ICC) Trial Competition, had two Odia students - Ishan Patnaik and Amrutanshu Dash. The competition was held in the ICC Courtroom - I in the Hague (Netherlands), where 49 teams from 35 countries took part. Both the lads are from Bhubaneswar and they hail from an illustrious lineage of academicians.
Footloose
The 16th summer football coaching camp, organised by Ravenshaw Morning Club, Cuttack, concluded on June 9. The camp, which was held on the varsity playground, saw participation by hundred youngsters. Narendra Kumar Sahoo, Pravakar Bardhan and Nipendra Kumar Das had imparted coaching to the campers.
Flying colours
The pass percentage of the Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, in Plus Three has been 75.08, while Soro UN college has captured as many as five top slots. The result was declared on June 9. Out of 60 colleges of Balasore (37) and Bhadrak (23) where 9,504 candidates took the exams, 6,846 have emerged successful. The result of 387 candidates have been withhrld while 2,272 have failed in the tests. The five toppers from Soro UN College are Jaykrushna Sahu (physics), Rasmita Palai (chemistry), Manoj Bhera (mathematics), Kabita Chakraborty (zoology) and Dattatreya Das (English).
Job training
A manufacturing giant in the home appliances sector joined hands with Gram Tarang of Centurion University for skill training with the inauguration of Forklift Technician Workshop on the university campus at Jatni in Bhubaneswar. The workshop that commenced from June 9 will provide employment-linked training to young people in operations and maintenance of forklift machines. Gram Tarang is a social entrepreneurial outreach entity of the university. The initiative will provide hands-on training to interested students.
Art for cause
A national-level private bank has launched Creative Masters, an online drawing competition where participants can draw a depiction of a social cause such as education for less privileged children, save a girl child or support the elderly. Anyone above four years of age can take part in Creative Masters by submitting their drawing online to www.creativemasters.co.in. Participants can also choose to sit and draw at any of the bank’s branches on Creative Saturdays, planned on June 7 and June 14, 2014, and upload their entries on the spot. The jury comprises ad guru Piyush Pandey and art exponent G. G. Waghmare. Select entries will be offered for sale and proceeds will be donated to support social causes.
