A Creative strokes

Balasore’s Art and Craft College is organising a weeklongn explosion of bright colours and uninhibited creativity of designers made for a heady cocktail at Kirti Kalpana, the annual ramp show of KIIT School of Fashion Technology, Bhubaneswar, on May 4. Twelve female and six male models sashayed the ramp in outfits created by the final year students of 2009-13 batch. The catalogue reflected the creative genius of the students. Each of the 16 student designers had created six outfits that received rave response from the crowd. Besides popular models such as Subhamita Pal and Nanda Majumdar, 16 kid model from KIIT International School also sashayed the ramp with great confidence and poise.

The panel of experts, who judged the show, included Odia actor Buddhaditya Mohanty, designer of Lakme Fashion Week fame Manas Das and joint director of National Institute of Fashion Technology Binaya Bhusan Jena. A souvenir “Kirti Kalpana” was also unveiled on the occasion. CEO of KIIT School of Fashion Technology H.S. Khatua said the first batch of students had met his expectations of imbibing and internalising the concept of fashion design in its true sense. summer camp for school children of the town to hone their skills in various creative fields.

Nearly 100 kids are taking part in the event that was inaugurated on Sunday by district SP Amrita Dash. Trained teachers have been roped in for the workshops in painting, terracotta, clay modelling, flowers and soft toy making. President of the college Himansu Das said the objective of the camp, organised for the fifth consecutive year, was to promote art and crafts besides identifying the hidden potential among children.

Wonder car

A team of 24 students of KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, have fashioned a vehicle powered by solar energy, which, they claim, would change the face of the global automobile industry. Christened “Yuva”, the 65-kg car has solar panels overhead, each having a power intake of 80watt, and charges four batteries each. It runs at a speed of 40km per hour.

The project has been developed under the guidance of faculty advisor Isham Panigrahi and mentor Akhilesh Dewangan. Team Yuva is led by students Shadab Ahmed and Abhishek Kumar Sinha. Willow power nSiksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University, Bhubaneswar, recently felicitated promising all-rounder Swagatika Rath, who earned a berth in the national women’s cricket team for a tournament against Bangladesh last month. Rath, a right hand batswoman and off-break bowler, who played three ODIs and two T20 international matches, was presented a trophy and a cash award of Rs 50,000 at a ceremony organised on the varsity campus.

Vice-chancellor Prof. R.P. Mohanty, who felicitated the cricketer, urged students to take up sports, as it was integral to academic life. The university had also honoured Roshnara Parvin, another woman cricketer from Odisha, for making it to the women’s World Cup team earlier this year. Law of the land nCentral University of Orissa, Koraput, organised a colloquium on “Legal Education in Post-modern India” in Sunabeda. Legal luminaries expressed opinions on the status of legal education.

Rock and water session

Aryan Institute of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar, organised a seminar on “Rock Mechanics and Water Resources Engineering” last week. Director of the Groundwater Survey of India, S.B. Ray, addressed faculty members from various engineering colleges.
