Leader resigns

Bhubaneswar: Senior BJD leader Bishnu Das resigned as Rajya Sabha member and submitted his resignation letter to Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari. Das will take over the deputy chairman office of the state planning board shortly.   

Suicide probe

Bhubaneswar: The standing committee of the state assembly related to the agriculture department will probe into causes of farmers' suicides that took part place this year. Speaker Niranjan Pujari said the committee would submit its report in the next session. The Congress and the BJP had been stalling the proceedings of the House for the past six days demanding the probe by a House committee.

Paddy prices

Bhubaneswar: The Congress and the BJP on Tuesday demanded to adopt a unanimous resolution seeking enhancement of minimum support price for the paddy to Rs 2800 per quintal from the existing Rs 1450. Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra had requested the Speaker to allow him to move the resolution.

Court relief

Sambalpur: Sabyasachi Mishra, son of industrialist and chairman of Nayagarh sugar mill Trailokya Mishra, who was arrested on the charges of dowry torture on Friday was granted bail on Tuesday by a local court. His wife Lopamudra had also alleged that he forced her into wife swapping a few days after their marriage in 2006. Lopamudra had lodged a complaint against his husband, her father in law Trailokya, and her mother-in law Asha Manjari in June last year.

Tortured

Bhubaneswar: Police have detained the head of a shelter home in Jatani for allegedly torturing a 16-year-old Bangladeshi national. The cops said that the head of the shelter home was being interrogated. The minor had informed about his harassment to the Child Welfare Committee, Puri after he escaped from the shelter home.
