Gang busted

Rayagada: Police have busted an inter-state dacoit gang and arrested eight persons in Rayagada on Wednesday. They also seized two cars, two bikes and eight mobile phones from their possession. However, one robber is still at large. The arrested persons would be produced before the court on Wednesday.

Rose Valley

Balasore: A designated court of Balasore allowed the economic offences wing to take Rose Valley Group chief Gautam Kundu on a four-day remand on Wednesday. Though the EOW had appealed for a five-day remand of Kundu, the court granted four days.

Bangla boy

Bhubaneswar: The Bangladeshi minor boy, who masterminded the escape of 11 kids from Ruchika shelter home in the city, has been traced in Cuttack on Wednesday.

Cop found dead

Balasore: A day after the death of Basta police station sub inspector Kunwar Majhi in a road accident, his friend sub inspector Jagannath Nayak was also found hanging in his official quarter on the premises of the police station. Prima facie says that it could be a suicide. A suicide note has also been seized from the spot. The deceased has mentioned mental stress to be the reason behind his extreme step.  

Boat capsizes 

Angul: A man went missing after his fishing boat capsized in Rengali reservoir at Jharabahala in Angul district on Tuesday night. A fire tender unit has launched a search operation to trace the missing person, identified as Budhuram Tapan. The fisherman, who belongs to Jharabahal village.

Sunstroke 

Bhubaneswar: Death toll reported due to sunstroke in state mounted to 33 on Wednesday. According to the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), out of 33 deaths, the government has completed enquiry into eight cases. Three sunstroke death cases have been confirmed while five others died due to other reasons. Seven cases were reported from Angul district while Sambalpur and Khurda districts recorded five and three cases respectively. Dhenkanal, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Sundargarh recorded two cases each so far.

Water protest

Balangir: Vehicular movement came to a standstill between Balangir and Kantabanji as local residents staged a blockade on the national highway near Belpada protesting water scarcity in the area under Patnagarh subdivision of the district. A number of people blocked the highway and demanded immediate supply of drinking water in their houses.

Dowry case

Bhubaneswar: In a major setback to Odisha cadre IPS officer and Jagatsinghpur superintendent of police Jayanarayn Pankaj, a trial court in Ghaziabad issued summons to the 2005-batch officer asking him to depose it personally in connection with a dowry harassment case filed against him by his wife Meenal Agrawal. The Ghaziabad additional chief judicial magistrate court asked the officer to record his statement by August 5, 2017.
