Niser project enters final lap

Bhubaneswar, June 9: The construction of the upcoming campus of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (Niser) near Jatni is progressing at a rapid pace.

The construction that started in July 2011 is expected to be completed by July 2014.

The academic block, green house, two hostels and two residential are nearing completion, while other buildings are also at their final stages.

The 294.8-acre campus, 20km from the state capital, is being developed under the supervision of the directorate of construction, services and estate management of the department of atomic energy.

An official report said that 54 per cent of the work order value has already been achieved. The Larsen and Toubro (L&T) group is executing the construction of the Rs 459-crore campus project. So far, Rs 245 crore has already been spent.

Niser, is a central institute run by the department of atomic energy, and offers advanced courses in pure science. The institute at present is being run from the premises of the Institute of Physics.

The first batch of students passed out from the institute in 2012. The makeshift campus was built at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore in 2007.

Niser registrar A.K. Naik said: “There will be nine different hostels in the campus. Two hostels — one with double sharing and another single occupancy — are ready. The work for the administrative block, which will be the hub of all activities of the campus, is nearing completion. Two hostels, the administrative building and a green house are expected to be handed over the authorities by the end of July.’’

The campus will have an academic complex spread across 72,700sqm which will include 11 buildings such as school of sciences (chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics), humanities, library, auditorium and a meditation centre on the nearby hill.

The residential township will have a built up area of 10,2000sqm comprising hostels, 10 blocks of staff quarters, 76 senior quarters and one director’s bungalow.

sports complex will have a students’ activity centre, aquatic sports complex and playgrounds. Besides, the complex will have a community centre, bank, post office and health centre.

The Niser registrar said the institute had paid Rs 8.47 crore to the Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited for a dedicated power corridor for the new campus. The power will be supplied from the Mendhasal grid on city outskirts.

The Public Health Engineering Organisation has sought a report on water requirement of the institute.

A dedicated water supply line to Niser complex and upcoming ITT campus will be provided from the Mundali water treatment plant near river Mahanadi.
