Bhubaneswar, Nov. 4: Heavy rain triggered by a low pressure, the effect of cyclone Nilam, dampened the residents’ weekend spirit.
People at Acharya Vihar, Jagamara and parts of Old Town reeled from waterlogging and power outage as rain began pounding the capital city since Friday night. The downpour continued till Sunday morning, leaving streets inundated, and even homeless people and stray animals scurrying for cover.
While Bhubaneswar has received 110mm rainfall in the past 48 hours, the barometer read 277mm at Rambha in Ganjam district, the maximum for the state today. Cuttack recorded 80mm rainfall in the past two days.
“Heavy rain will occur only at one or two places in southern and coastal Odisha. The sky will remain overcast for the next three days. After November 7 or 8, the clouds will dissipate and the temperature will drop by two or three degrees Celsius,” said Sarat Chandra Sahu, director of Bhubaneswar meteorological office.
Torrential rains also affected train movement. A release from the East Coast Railway headquarters here said many trains had been cancelled, diverted or terminated short of their destination “because of breaches in train line and water flowing above danger mark on the Thandava river… in the Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam rail section.”
The flight schedule of most airlines connecting Bhubaneswar with other cities was not affected much. “An afternoon flight from Calcutta was delayed by nearly two hours on Friday because of bad weather conditions there,” said an official of Jet Airways.
