Bhubaneswar, July 23: The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, has announced its revised schedule for admission for the academic year 2013-14.

The premier institute is all set to add three new courses — BTech in food process technology and architecture, apart from integrated 5-year MSc course in life science — with an intake of 30 students each from this academic session.

A total of 90 seats were added this year to the previous 810 seats, taking the total number of seats to 900 from the Central Seat Allotment Board (CSAB)-2013.

At present, the institute is continuing with the admission process, including orientation and registration. Classes for the first batch will commence from 26 July.

During the past five years, the institute has added many new branches and courses such as biomedical, biotechnology, life science, industrial design and master’s degree in management.

The institute plans to add a number of centres of excellence in emerging areas of technology in the coming years, said director of the institute Sunil Kumar Sarangi, who is also chairman of the CSAB-2013. He is looking into the seats allotted to all the NITs, IIITs, centrally-funded technical institutes and other participating institutions.

The NIT Rourkela has approached the state government for allocation of 2.5 acres in Bhubaneswar for an extension centre. The centre will be for various distance education programmes, said the institute authorities.

Similarly, the authorities have asked the government for allotment of 400 acres in Rourkela for expansion of the campus and for a new campus of the institute.
