Cuttack, April 6: Police today arrested D.K. Sinha, 51, senior instructor of the Bhubanananda Odisha School of Engineering (Bose), from the CDA for allegedly making sexual advances and molesting a girl student.

However, Sinha was granted bail after he was produced before the court this morning.

The accused had been on the run for almost four days after the first-year student of the mechanical department had brought sexual harassment charges against him on March 30.

"Based on the student's complaint, the accused teacher was arrested and produced before the court today," said deputy commissioner of police Sanjeev Arora.

Arora said they would shortly record statements of the victim, other students, teachers and the college authorities for further investigation into the allegations.

The students alleged that the accused tried to molest the victim after she had fallen sick during a practical session on March 30 and was taken to a chamber to take rest.

The victim had immediately reported the matter to the authorities, but no step was taken against the teacher.

Demanding immediate suspension of the teacher, the students had then staged a demonstration on the campus.

Alleging inaction on part of the college authorities in taking action against the teacher for misbehaving with the girl, the students had gone on a rampage and damaged property inside the college on April 1.

"It was an unfortunate incident, and we were deeply hurt by the incident. Now as the teacher has been arrested we hope that things will be normal on the campus," said Kamlakant Rout, a student.

Following the senior instructor's arrest, normality is expected to return on Bose campus that had earlier witnessed large-scale violence and unrest over the issue.

"Already the concerned teacher has been suspended, and the police have arrested him. Today, the classes resumed after a gap of three days, and we hope that peace will continue to prevail on the campus," said principal Pradip Mohanty.

Mohanty said a high-level technical committee assessed that property of around Rs 4 lakh had been damaged during the students' unrest.

The college authorities have recommended for recovering the money from the students.

"Adequate steps will be taken to ensure that such kind of incidents do not recur on the campus as it creates bad impression about the educational institution," Mohanty said.
