Jajpur: A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a woman of his village for three years on false promise of marriage. The accused, Basanta Kumar Moharana, of Sendhapur village in Jenapur police limits, was arrested following a complaint from the 21-year-old victim who claimed that the accused had raped her for more three years on false promise of marriage.
The victim alleged that Moharana fell in love with her three years ago. Both the accused and the victim were in a relationship for more than three years. Jenapur police station inspector in charge Sushant Kumar Das said: "The accused had raped the victim several times between 2015 and 2018."
Their relationship turned sour this month after the woman came to know that the accused was trying to marry someone else.
"The woman went to Moharana's house and asked him to marry her. But, he refused to marry," police said.
The victim narrated the incident to the Moharana's parents who allegedly misbehaved with her, police further said.The woman brought the incident to the notice of the village committee for justice. The village committee on Monday told the accused to marry the victim, but he refused. Having no other option, the victim approached the police on Tuesday. The cops arrested the accused on Tuesday night and conducted medical examinations of both the accused and the victim on Wednesday.
The police said the accused was forwarded to the local court on Wednesday under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and later remanded to judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected.
