Keonjhar: A person has allegedly killed his elder brother at Galafula village, about 65km from the district headquarters town.
The assailant, Narahari Kamara, 42, had an angry exchange of words with his elder brother, Nilambar Kamara, 45. Narahari, who on Monday came home drunk, was scolded by his elder brother, who drove the former away from home for creating alcoholic nuisance. "In the process, Narahari suddenly started reacting violently and hit Nilambar on the rear portion of his head with an iron rod. The blow turned out to be a fatal one. Nilambar bled profusely and was received dead at Patana hospital," said Patana police station inspector Pramodini Sahu.
Narahari later surrendered before the police and was found repentant for perpetrating the murder. "The person is an alcohol addict, who has been remanded in judicial custody under Indian Penal Code Section 302 (murder)," said a police officer.
Last month, two such alcoholism related murders were reported in the district. A man had killed his mother-in-law at Manoharpur village of the district. Similarly, another person had stabbed his younger brother to death in inebriated state in Nandipada police limits. Sources said alcoholic violence was almost being reported on a daily basis across the district.
Alcoholism had become rampant in hamlets, predominantly inhabited by tribal people. "The alcoholic habits of the male earning members are breaking up the families. Alcohol induced violence is being reported at regular intervals in various police station areas of the district. The police are trying to involve civil society groups for sensitising people to give up liquor addiction," said sub-divisional police officer Sriharsha Mishra.
