Jajpur: Police arrested a 27-year-old man on the charge of rape on a compliant by a 23-year-old woman who alleged that the man had physical relationship with her on the pretext of marriage and later refused to marry her.

The incident took place in Sorai village in Jajpur district.

The Jenapur police registered a case against the accused, identified as Prakash Kumar Sahoo alias Banku, of Sorai village under Madhusudanpur panchayat.

However, the accused fled from the village soon after the complaint was lodged against him.

The victim said in the police complaint that Prakash fell in love with her two years ago. She said they were in a relationship. Prakash had several times promised to marry her.

"We both were in a relationship for the past two years. Prakash started having physical relation with me on the pretext of marriage," the victim said in her complaint with the police.

The police said woman and accused lived in the same village and knew each other for a long time.

There was no problem in their relationship until June 18 when the victim came to know Prakash was planning to get married to another girl.

Jenapur police officer Sushant Kumar Das said Prakash had physical relation with the woman on the promise of marriage. Recently, the woman learned from a reliable sources that Prakash was planning to marry another girl.

"The victim went to Prakash's house and asked him to marry her. But, he refused. When the woman narrated the incident to his parents they allegedly beat her up," police said.

After this, the woman decided to approach the police and lodge a complaint on Saturday.

The police have booked the accused under Section 376 (rape) and other relevant sections of IPC. However, the accused is yet to be arrested.

Man kills son

A 75-year-old man Pinke Bariha killed his son Pinke Subba Rao, 56, and committed suicide on Saturday night at Raipada village in Bargarh district. Land dispute was said to be the cause of the murder, police said.

Subba Rao was sleeping on the varanda in front of the house when Bariha came and picked up a fight with him over property matters. Immediately he brought a sharp axe and killed Rao.

Soon after the incident, Bariha committed suicide by hanging himself. The police seized the bodies and filed two cases in this connection.
