Jajpur: A youth has been booked on charge of cheating a 19-year-old woman on the pretext of marriage.

The incident came to light when the woman's mother lodged a police complaint in Jajpur on Thursday. The teen, who got pregnant allegedly by the youth, accompanied her mother to the police station.

The police have registered a case of rape against the accused, Baidhar Khadanga, 26, of Satamana village.

According to the complaint, the five-month pregnant woman used to work as a contract worker in a private firm, where Baidhar also worked.

They fell in love and the accused had allegedly been in a relationship with the woman for the past year.

Over the months, Baidhar had apparently promised to marry her several times, and it was based on those promises that the women agreed to get into a physical relationship with him, the complaint said.

When the woman got to know that she was pregnant, she urged Baidhar to marry her. To this, Baidhar bought time.

Then around April end, when the woman started putting pressure on him to marry her, the youth avoided her and finally turned down the proposal.

Following this, the woman lodged a police complaint, based on which a case has been registered.

Bayree police station inspector-in-charge Niranjan Sabar said: "The accused have fled the area. We are on the job and will arrest him shortly."
