Bhubaneswar, March 26: Station manager of Dhenkanal railway station was crushed under the wheels of a goods train on Saturday night.

The incident took place when the deceased, Pabitra Nayak, 57, was inspecting the rescue work of a derailed wagon of a goods train near the station, 80 kilometres away from here.

Government Railway Police said the incident took place around 11pm yesterday when the official was at the site of derailment of the wagon with some other railway staff members.

"We have registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for post-mortem. Further probe will ascertain the circumstances leading to his death," said a senior GRP official.

A source said that the incident came to light after a senior section engineer spotted the mutilated body of Pabitra, a resident of Jirala village in Kamakhyanagar police limits, in Dhenkanal district.

"We suspect Pabitra was either hit by the engine of the derailed wagon or by another goods train coming towards Cuttack," said another official.

Chief public relations officer of East Coast Railway (ECoR) J.P. Mishra said that they had ordered a probe into the incident.

"A detailed probe will be conducted to ascertain the circumstances leading to his death. Besides, authorities concerned have been told to provide all service related benefits to the family of the deceased at the earliest," said Mishra.

A railway official said that the employees involved in rescue and restoration should adhere to safety norms.

"Most of the times derailed trains are repaired on the railway tracks. They should be very careful and alert as other trains ply on the tracks," said the railway official.

In June 2015, a railway employee had died and another one was injured in the coach yard at Satya Nagar during the maintenance work of a railway engine.

The incident took place when the deceased D. Prashu was under the railway engine and another train hit the engine.
