Little chess wizards make right moves - Grandmaster Barua tells children to focus on game and not on winning

Bhubaneswar, Dec. 7: Rakesh Kumar Jena of Markat Nagar Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir won The Telegraph All-Odisha Open School Chess Championship-2014, while Kalinga Institute of Social Science won the best school prize.

The event that kick-started at KIIT University on Friday culminated today. India's second Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua gave away prizes among the winners this evening.

'Children should love chess if they want to excel in this game and try to dedicate themselves to it,' said Barua.

He even urged the kids not to fall for ratings, which are good as well as bad for them.

Advising parents not to put pressure on their wards when it comes to winning a game, the chess wizard said that The Telegraph school chess has been a good platform for budding talents.

Around 140 students from several schools from various districts took part in this event, which was restarted after five years.

'This tournament is a good platform for budding talents like us. We got good opportunity to showcase our talent by playing several rated players,' said Ananya Priyadarshini, a budding chess player.

Students representing their school and also from different district chess associations such as Cuttack, Puri, Jajpur, Khurda, Sundargarh, Balasore took part in this three-day event.

Rakesh Kumar Jena, who is an FIDE Master, won this tournament by scoring 8.5 points.

There were nine rounds in this tournament. Anisha Mishra of Blessed Sacrament High School, Puri, became overall first runner-up, while Nilsu Pattnaik of DAV Public School, Rajabagicha, Cuttack, stood second runner-up.

Besides prizes were also distributed in different age categories. While Sreejana Dash of Loyala School won the under-6 girls' trophy, Aryan Mohapatra of Stewart School, Bhubaneswar, won the under-6 boys' category.

While KISS won the best school prize, Lajpat Rai DAV Public School Cuttack emerged second and Kendriya Vidyalaya, Puri, was third in school category.

Registrar of KIIT University Sasmita Samant gave away the prizes.
