Bhubaneswar, May 4: A 26-year-old tutor was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old girl.

The accused, Amir Barik, used to offer individual coaching to the victim, a Class-X student, who passed the recently conducted matriculation examinations this year.

The police said Barik, a native of Nirakarpur in Khurda, has been offering tuition to the girl, a resident of Sarakantara village within the limits of Khandagiri police station for the last one year.

The accused used to visit the residence of the victim’s family to give her private coaching. “The mother of the girl had lodged a complaint saying that Barik had kidnapped her daughter on April 23,” said a senior police officer.

Based on the complaint, the police conducted several raids at various places in Cuttack and rescued the girl from Akhuria near Gop in Puri district. However, the girl’s mother today alleged that Barik had raped her several times during her stay in Akhuria.

“We have sent the girl and the accused for medical examination and are investigating the matter,” said inspector in charge of Khandagiri police station Sanjib Satpathy.

Further investigations revealed that Barik was staying at a rented accommodation in Gop after allegedly kidnapping the girl. The police also found that Barik was working with a private security agency in Bhubaneswar on a part-time basis. The police said that the accused had an arts degree.

A case has been registered under sections 376 (rape), 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her to marry) and 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code.

Youth held

In another incident, a 22-year-old man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a 19-year-old girl from Master Canteen last night. Saheed Nagar police arrested Anil Prasad Das, a resident of a slum near IRC Village, after he allegedly kidnapped the girl.

The police said the incident took place when the girl, a native of Ichhapuram in Andhra Pradesh, landed here.

“The accused tried to forcibly take her on his motorcycle, but later some commuters rescued the girl near Vani Vihar. Later, the girl lodged a complaint. Subsequently, we arrested the accused,” said a police official.
