Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) has begun work on the redevelopment of Janpath under the Smart City Mission nearly four months after an executor for the ambitious project was selected.
On November 30, The Telegraph had reported the dillydallying attitude of the smart city administration in taking up the Smart Janpath project following which the authorities swung into action on Tuesday and initiated the project on the ground.
The authorities have proceeded to Bapuji Nagar Square with two excavators and started clearing and levelling the medians. Later, the plan is to begin work on the the streetscape design, sources said.
Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation also tweeted about the development and said: "Smart Janpath work started. It would be a public street for all. Will have kids Zone, cycle lanes and very wide footpaths. Would be a 'Must See' Street in Bhubhaneswar."
Retweeting it, BSCL managing director and municipal commissioner Krishan Kumar wrote: "This is going to be transformative in the way we see public streets in cities. Streets for all, not just cars."
The executor of the project has got till July 2019 to complete the project.
Once complete, the Janpath will be redeveloped with lane driving, streetscape design, beautification, landscaping, intersection design and other infrastructure.
