
Condolence meetings
Tributes were offered to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who died on August 16, at various schools. Students of DAV Chandrasekharpur offered floral tributes and highlighted his contributions of at a condolence meeting organised on the school premises. Sishu Vidya Mandir at Berhampur also organised a condolence meeting for the leader. A candle march was also organised at a number of schools.
Felicitations
Blossoms School in Bhubaneswar felicitated several prominent figures in the fields of art, education and social activities recently. The programme, which was held on its premises, was attended by members of the Blossoms Managing Committee and some socially active citizens. The Lifetime Achievement Award in Education was given to Jyotshna Mohapatra while the Education Leadership Award went to Purnima Paikaray. Special awards were conferred on Sanjukta Pradhan for her contribution in the field of social activities and also Pradeep Kumar Das, for his dedication in the fields of music and art. The prize winners of the science exhibition Navonmesh-2018 were also given medals and prizes.
Quiz time
Sahodaya Schools Complex, Bhubaneswar chapter, held a quiz competition at DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, on August 21. A total 25 schools took part in both junior and senior categories. DAV Chandrasekharpur won in the senior category while DAV CDA Cuttack was the runners-up. In the junior category, DPS Kalinga was the champion while DAV Unit-VIII emerged runners-up. Quiz master Bibhas Rath Attreya conducted the quiz. School principal K.C. Satapathy handed over the certificates.
On the field
Maa Tarini Youth Club and Kundurupani Youth Club jointly organised the 2nd annual sports meet at Champua in Keonjhar district. Various sporting events were held for local school students, village women, youths and the elderly. Journalist Rajendra Kumar Sahu was chief guest at the programme and praised the local youths for their initiatives taken for tribal children.
Going creative
Creative School of Art and Craft in Mayurbhanj held competitions in art, music, dance and painting here recently. Hundreds of children took part and received prizes for their performances. The prize distribution ceremony was presided over by the organisation's chief adviser Charu Chandra Das. Journalist and social activist Kavi Vishnu Satpathy, who was chief guest, gave away the certificates and medals to the young achievers.
Say no to plastic
Rotary Club of Brahmapur organised an awareness rally on the theme No Plastic and Go Green, which was flagged off by additional SP Santanu Dash. The aim of the rally was to create awareness among people to boycott the use of plastic and make the environment clean. The members also distributed cotton bags. Students of St Vincent's Convent School performed a street play urging people to boycott plastic.
Youth parliament
The 31st National Youth Parliament Competition (regional level) of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangsthan, Bhubaneswar region, was organised on August 16 and 17. SDGM, East Coast Railway-cum-chairman of Vidyalaya management committee, Hemant Kumar Dutta graced the inauguration day as chief guest. Former MP Kharabela Swain joined as jury for various competitions. Principal Preeti Roy welcomed all the dignitaries and participants. Around 275 participants from five Kendriya Vidyalayas of Bhubaneswar Region took part.
