Berhampur: Gosaninuagaon police found 315kg of silver jewellery worth Rs 61.62 lakh from a car on Andhapasara Road here on Monday and detained a jeweller and the driver of the car in this connection.

"We found huge quantity of silver ornaments inside a Duster car during checking at 8:30pm on Monday. We have detained the jeweller, Kedar Achary, of Aska and the driver of the vehicle. These ornaments were purchased from Agra and the car was being driven to Berhampur from Bhubaneswar," said inspector in-charge of Gosaninuagaon police station Kulamani Sethi.

The additional superintendent of police of Berhampur, Shantanu Kumar Das, said Kedar Achary delivered more than three quintals of silver ornaments in Bhubaneswar and was on the way to Berhampur to deliver the remaining quantity.

"Though Achary produced the purchase bill, we requested the sales tax officials to verify it and the transactions. We will follow the next course of action once the sales tax department submits the report," Sethi said. In-charge deputy commissioner of sales tax (vigilance wing) in Berhampur Kulamani Malik said the purchase document which Achary produced was not valid according to our rules and regulations. "These documents are invalid and we have started our legal procedure for punishment," Malik said.

"We have weighed all the ornaments in front of Kedar Achary. We will collect the tax penalty from the jeweller subsequently. This process would take some time and it is too early to divulge the details. However, we are following all the formalities and modalities," Malik further said.
