Cuttack, July 17: Rausapatna resident Dushmantraj Biswal, like most residents of the area, has been spending anxious moments following last night's rain.

"We hope that there are no further spells of rain. We have had enough trouble with the rainwater from the streets entering our homes," Biswal said.

Overflowing surface water drainage channels inundated large parts of the city, trapping more than two lakh people in their homes.

Waterlogging isn't new to Cuttack, but last night's heavy rain completely caught the residents and the civic administration by surprise as the city struggled to cope with their homes getting inundated. The city streets overflowed with sewage from the drainage channels in the aftermath of the rain that lasted less than 90 minutes.

Preliminary findings indicate that the inflow of rainwater into the drains was nearly 700 per cent more than their carrying capacityKhannagar, Badambadi, Rajabagicha Labour Colony, Meria Bazaar,Gamandiha, Kesharpur, Sutahat, Odia Bazaar, Police Colony, Stuart Patana, Srivihar, Kafla, Sidheswar Sahi, Bidanasi and Tanla Sahi at Tulsipur<>and Bauri Sahi among others.
