Highway robbers in police net

Police today arrested two members of a gang that robbed people on the highways. Two special squads have been created to arrest the remaining four members of the gang.

Cuttack, Sept 19: Police today arrested two members of a gang that robbed people on the highways. Two special squads have been created to arrest the remaining four members of the gang.

The gang, some members of which are teenagers, have been targeting truck drivers and motorcyclists at isolated parts of the national highway.

The two arrested yesterday have been identified as Sibasish Mohanty, 22, and Sunil Das, 19, of Nuapatna in Khurda.Deputy commissioner of police Sanjeev Arora said the gang used to target vehicles plying late at night by attacking drivers or motorists with knives. The two are part of a six-member gang that is suspected to be involved at least 15 cases of robbery in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Puri, Jajpur, Khurda, Chandikhole, Jajpur and other parts of the state.

Arora said the process of collecting information about their involvement in similar cases at Puri, Khurda and Jajpur is on. Both Mohanty and Das had attacked at least five persons, including an advocate of Orissa High Court, with knives and had looted three mobile phones and over Rs 6,000 in cash on September 2.

The cops have seized from the two a steel knife, cash worth Rs 2,100, a motorcycle and a mobile phone that were robbed from a truck driver at Jagatpur.

"Efforts are on to arrest the other gang members," said inspector in charge of Chauliaganj police station Ajay Das.
