Bhubaneswar; Jan. 16: A 45-year-old woman was severely injured after goons attacked her in the wee hours of the morning today at the Press colony in the Unit III area. They also allegedly tried to outrage her modesty.
The woman, Sobha Biswal, a resident of the Shanti Nagar slum, was initially admitted to the Capital Hospital and later shifted to S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital when her condition deteriorated.
The Kharavel police have detained a person in connection with the case.
According to Biswal’s family she had gone to a teashop in her locality in the morning. Some youths from a local club, who were heavily drunk, passed lewd remarks at her without any provocation.
“They even abused the girls in the locality. When my mother objected they thrashed her with cricket bats and stumps,” said Dipa Biswal, her daughter who lodged the complaint with the police.
The complaint said that the youths had attacked Biswal with the intention of killing her.
In her complaint Dipa had mentioned that these youths attacked her mother to kill her.
As Biswal cried for help and the slum dwellers gathered at the spot the goons fled the spot. Badly injured Biswal was rushed to the hospital.
The Kharvela Nagar police have registered a case under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 341 (wrongful restraint), 294 (obscene acts and songs) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of Indian Penal Code.
The police later detained one person and banned the club. The matter was under investigation, police added.
The dwellers of Shanti Nagar slum also alleged that the youths of the club had been involved in different kinds of illegal activities.
They were collecting extorting money from businessmen in the area.
“These youths had been teasing women of the area,” said Biakram Nayak, a slum dweller.
