Bhubaneswar, March 16: A day after a 16-year-old Bangladeshi national accused a government-recognised shelter home officials of inflicting torture on him, the Khurda Child Welfare Committee today shifted 50 inmates, including 15 girls, of the Jatni-based facility to other places.
Khurda committee members said inmates would be counselled to ascertain the truth behind the allegations.
Committee member Benudhar Senapati said that to conducted a free and impartial probe, the inmates were shifted from the home.
"Our counsellors and other social workers will counsel them in the next few days, and later, we will ask the inmates about the home's treatment towards them," said Senapati.
Yesterday, the minor, who had escaped from the Jatni shelter home and was rescued from Puri railway station on March 8, alleged physical torture. He also accused a home official of assaulting girl inmates. Based on the complaint, the Puri Child Welfare Committee chairperson Sidharth Ray wrote to the state government, asking for probe.
On the other hand, the shelter home employees alleged foul play and raised fingers at another such facility of maligning them.
"Another child shelter home in Bhubaneswar, which has been lying non-operational for illegal activities, demanded Rs 1 lakh from our director. When he refused to pay it, the entire episode was plotted. There should be a proper probe," said a home employee.
